WHY SHOULD I CONSIDER INVESTING IN A POND? There are many sporting & practical reasons to own a pond - swimming, fishing, boating, skating/hockey & more. Ponds can irrigate your lawn/ garden & aid in firefighting, Your pond ecosys- tem – attracts all forms of wildlife – fish, turtles, frogs, dragonflies, ducks, swans & even deer will come for a drink. HAD A POND FOR YEARS, LATELY ITS BEING OVERRUN BY ALGAE &WEEDS - WHAT CANWE DO? Over years ponds accumulate leaves, debris & storm/spring run-off contribute unwanted nutrients. Once sufficient nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus) are available, aquatic plants & algae will flourish, sometimes uncontrollably, especially when these 3 factors water, sunlight and nutrients combine simulta- neously. To reduce aquatic vegetation, sunlight penetration & nutrient loading must be minimized. Removing existing vegetation will reduce future growth; an aquatic weed eradicator & pond net really help. Light penetration is reduced by adding TrueBlue, it acts like pond sunglass- es. Light reduction is most naturally achieved with a surface aerator (foun- tain), which ripples the water surface, deflecting sunlight in an environmental- ly friendly manner. Limiting light pene- tration limits plant growth. Oxygen pro- duced by the aerator/windmill breaks down nutrients. A fountain or windmill is the single best investment for keeping a healthy pond. Nutrient breakdown is assisted with Bacta Pur or Nature’s Pond conditioner. These products augment naturally occurring bacteria, which digest nutrients quickly when additional oxygen is provided. Growing bacteria rather than unsightly weeds& algae is generally preferred, promoting healthy pond. WHY STOCK TROUT IN MY POND? Own a pond, & critters will come. Trout balance your ecosystem, eating mosqui- toes, black flies etc. Trout generally do not reproduce, growing larger in size. Reproducing fish species, bass goldfish etc. can become quite problematic, by dominating &overtaking a pond. Think of all the fun the kids will have catching these trout. They’re quite tasty and great source of Omega 3’s. It’s just fun to feed them and watch them jump.
