A swather, also known as a windrower, is specialized farm equipment. It is mainly used in Canada, The United States of America and Australia. This is because it cuts the plants and therefore the curing time is reduced, which is important in shorter growing conditions. The Swather replaced the binder, and is needed since combines are now the standard instead of threshing. A swather works by cutting the crop at its stem, where it is then placed on a conveyer, which places it neatly in a windrow. A windrow is the name for a neat row of cut or mowed hay or small grain crop. This allows it to dry and therefore allows the crop to be rolled, combined or bailed.
