Video: Allis Chalmers 1950’s - How Heavy Should A Tractor Be?

“A farm tractor needs weight for traction. The purpose of this film is to show how traction is dependent upon weight. It proposes to answer the question that many a farmer has asked..” Back in the 1950’s, Allis Chalmers compared the weight of tractors to the type of farm work it performed:
  • 4,000 lbs for light work such as mowing
  • 5,000 lbs for planting/cultivating
  • 6,000 lbs for heavier drawbar work
  • 7,000 lbs for the heaviest tasks which require power and weight for traction
Tractors sure have ‘grown’ since then!
