Video: Rolling Pulses

Peas and lentils are rolled to help with harvest later in the growing season. Learn more about recommendations for when to roll each pulse crop.

Rolling lentils helps with harvestability. Lentils can be rolled after emergence up to the fifth true leaf stage or seventh node stage. Avoid rolling lentils when the soil is very moist, as seedling lentils are susceptible to being uprooted under these conditions.

Rolling field peas helps with harvestability. Peas can be rolled up to the third true leaf stage or fifth node stage. To minimize damage roll in the heat of the day when the plants are a bit wilted.

Rolling chickpeas is not necessary as the plants have better harvestability than peas or lentils. If you do plan to roll chickpea it should be done prior to emergence to prevent injury that could open up the tissues to disease. If you must roll after emergence you can do so up to 6 leaf stage (4 nodes) in the heat of the day when the plants are somewhat wilted.

Roll soybeans prior to emergence or from V1 (1st trifoliate) to V3 (3rd trifoliate). Roll in the heat of the day when plants slightly limp. Do not roll during emergence as the arch is very susceptible to mechanical damage.
