American Angus Association to Recognize New Genetic Condition

American Angus Association to Recognize New Genetic Condition

By Amanda Brodhagen, Farms.com

The American Angus Association announced that it will now recognize Developmental Duplication (DD) as a genetic condition, but said it would not require mandatory testing for animal registration.

Calves with DD are born with additional limbs, which typically resemble additional legs in the neck or shoulder. Animals born with the condition, typically get limbs surgically removed and are said to do well following the medical procedure.

In a letter to Angus breeders, the association said it assumes that its members will make good decisions when addressing DD, including use of DNA testing. In addition to DD, the association also recognizes five other genetic conditions, which are known to be carried in some Angus cattle.
