Strategies to identify and avoid digital scams effectively

As real-life interactions increasingly move to online platforms, the threat of digital fraud has surged dramatically in Canada.

A recent Interac cyber security survey found that 86% of Canadians are feeling overwhelmed by continuous fraud attempts, with over half experiencing these scams weekly. This problem spans various demographics and regions, highlighting an urgent need for consumer awareness and protection.

Fraudsters are becoming more adept at manipulating online transactions and communications, using emails, social media, and even casual chats to exploit unsuspecting individuals. Alarmingly, nearly 38% of Canadians have encountered scams where fraudsters used personal information to masquerade as trusted contacts.

To combat these scams, Canadians can empower themselves by acting as the first line of defence. Implementing the "Stop, Scrutinize, Speak Up" strategy can be effective -

  • STOP - When confronted with unexpected requests for information, take a moment to pause. Trust your instincts and avoid rushing to provide personal details.

  • SCRUTINIZE - Carefully assess the situation for signs of fraud. Stay informed about the latest scams by using resources like the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre. Always think critically before responding to unfamiliar messages.

  • SPEAK UP - If you suspect a scam, confirm the legitimacy of the communication through a different method. If you’ve inadvertently shared sensitive information, reach out to your financial service provider and report the incident to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre without delay.

By employing these strategies, Canadians can enhance their ability to detect and prevent online fraud, safeguarding their personal and financial information in an increasingly digital world.
