USMEF explores Indonesian market for U.S. beef and pork
The U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF) and the Indiana Soybean Alliance (ISA) have identified Indonesia as a burgeoning market for U.S. red meat.
Led by USMEF Chair Randy Spronk, the team engaged with Indonesian buyers and participated in the Food and Hotel Indonesia, one of the largest ASEAN food trade shows.
The discussions highlighted the rapid increase in U.S. pork's market share in Indonesia, largely due to reduced competition from the European Union.
With a notable 21% increase in pork exports to Indonesia in the first half of 2024, the U.S. is making significant inroads into this diverse market.
Spronk noted the potential for market development in areas with substantial non-Muslim populations and drew parallels to successful strategies used in Colombia. He stressed the low consumption levels of pork and beef among potential consumers, seeing this as an opportunity for growth through targeted marketing and education about the quality of U.S. red meat.
Challenges such as the extensive plant approval process required in Indonesia were discussed, but with USMEF's local presence and support from the USDA's promotional programs, these are being addressed.
Funding from the National Pork Board and other U.S. agricultural promotion entities supports these efforts, ensuring a coordinated approach to overcoming trade barriers and enhancing the presence of U.S. red meat in Indonesia.
