Wildfires devastate northwestern Oklahoma farms

By Farms.com

Amidst the aftermath of devastating wildfires in Northwestern Oklahoma, Agriculture Secretary Blayne Arthur embarked on a crucial mission to witness the impact firsthand and converse with the impacted producers. The journey, accompanied by the Oklahoma Cattlemen's Foundation staff, revealed the extensive damage and the agricultural community's urgent needs.

Ellis County was particularly hard-hit, with a staggering loss of over 1,000 cattle and significant infrastructure damage, including extensive loss of fencing crucial for livestock management. Arthur noted the ironic twist of fate where last year's beneficial moisture led to abundant but now burnt grasslands, further complicating recovery efforts.

The discussions Arthur had with local producers not only highlighted the immediate challenges, such as feeding and housing surviving livestock but also emphasized the long-term recovery process. She advised producers on the importance of meticulous record-keeping for accessing federal support through various USDA programs aimed at disaster recovery.

To facilitate aid, the Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Foundation has made resources available for affected ranchers, offering guidance on applying for assistance and providing information on how the broader community can contribute to relief efforts. Additionally, impacted ranchers in Texas have access to resources through the Texas Panhandle Fire Relief Fund, demonstrating a united front in agricultural disaster response.

This visit by Secretary Arthur shines a light on the resilience of the agricultural community and the collaborative efforts required to navigate the aftermath of natural disasters, ensuring that affected producers receive the support needed to rebuild and recover.
