The announcement was made late Wednesday - with a Canadian subsidiary of the processing company JBS USA who is an owned subsidiary of Brazil-based JBS S.A.  The Brazil parent company JBS also signed an option to buy XL Foods facilities in Calgary and the U.S.

"This action is another positive step to relicensing the XL Lakeside beef plant," said Brian Nilsson, co-CEO of XL. "We welcome the assistance of JBS and their resources."

JBS USA has over 60,000 employees and specializes in beef and pork products distributing to 60 countries. The company also holds shares in Pilgrim’s Pride Corp.  which is the second largest poultry company in the U.S.
