The Federal Milk Marketing Order (FMMO) hearing, slated to commence on August 23 in Carmel, Indiana, is spotlighted by the American Farm Bureau Federation. The organization is actively reaching out to dairy farmers, urging them to have their say.
In total, 21 proposals are tabled for this event. A key proposal has its roots in the National Milk Producers Federation’s May 1 submission. In addition to their main proposal, the AFBF has forwarded four more, with many other groups adding theirs. Dairy farmers will have the platform to express their viewpoints during this hearing.
Two avenues are open for farmer participation: physical presence or virtual connection. For the hands-on approach, farmers can walk in, find a USDA official, and secure an hour to delve into the matters at hand. For the virtual avenue, early registration is a must, targeting a Friday for input. Given the likely duration of the hearing, spanning three to four weeks, there are multiple opportunities for virtual interventions.
Farmers can register online via ams.usda.gov. The FMMO's pivotal role in shaping how dairy farmers are compensated monthly underscores this hearing's importance. Through it, the USDA hopes to refine the process to ensure farmers are rightly compensated and that the system remains updated and aligned with its original goals.
