New Program Reduces 2025 Premiums for Eligible Producers

Delaware Department of Agriculture (DDA) has launched a $2 million initiative to assist farmers with crop insurance costs for 2025.

The Delaware Agricultural Production Insurance Assistance Program, created in collaboration with the USDA Risk Management Agency (RMA), provides premium reductions for farmers enrolled in eligible 2024 insurance plans. The program offers a 30% discount on premiums, capped at $10 per covered acre.

Crop insurance is essential for protecting farmers from economic losses caused by environmental and market challenges. The program ensures that producers can afford adequate coverage, strengthening financial security for the agricultural sector.

“This type of crop insurance program is unique in that it was a bipartisan effort that originated in Delaware to help protect Delaware producers and our agriculture industry,” said Secretary of Agriculture Don Clifton. “This program is based upon a farmer’s choices in their risk management strategy and helping them select the right insurance plan for protecting their revenue.”

Farmers who had crop insurance coverage in 2024 will automatically qualify for the 2025 discount. In 2024, Delaware producers secured 2,440 crop insurance policies, covering over 309,873 acres, with total indemnities reaching $9.14 million.

DDA encourages farmers to contact their insurance agents for further information. Those without 2024 coverage should sign up now to be eligible for discounted premiums in 2026.

Catastrophic risk protection policies are excluded, but the program is expected to help farmers enhance their coverage options and secure long-term financial stability.

The program was established under HB 87 and signed into law in 2024, reinforcing Delaware’s commitment to supporting its agricultural community.
