HBCU Students Tackle Food Costs and Supply Chain Challenges through Tech

In response to rising food prices and supply chain issues, Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are stepping forward with solutions that combine innovation, sustainability, and entrepreneurship.

At the heart of this movement is Innovation Venture, a joint initiative by Capital One and Delaware State University.

This national platform allows students to present ideas for improving agriculture and food distribution, such as using smart transport systems or applying blockchain for food traceability. Their goal is to make food more affordable and available to everyone.

The core of Innovation Venture is a high-stakes competition where students can win up to $225,000 to build prototypes, protect their innovations, and grow businesses. This support helps transform creative ideas into market-ready solutions that improve agricultural efficiency and food access.

The initiative also supports mentorship and partnerships between students, faculty, and industry leaders. It helps HBCUs gain access to the resources needed to innovate and lead in agriculture, biotechnology, and food logistics.

“Innovation is not just an investment — it is a strategic move to safeguard food security, create jobs and drive economic growth for generations to come.”

Recognizing the urgent need for food system reform, the program encourages collaboration across sectors. It aligns with national priorities around affordability, domestic food production, and economic resilience.

By equipping HBCU students with tools to lead, Innovation Venture is building the next generation of agricultural innovators — shaping a future where food is more secure, affordable, and accessible.
