New leadership at USDA to strengthen food and nutrition services

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced a pivotal shift in its leadership, appointing new senior staff to enhance its food, nutrition, and consumer services. These appointments reflect the USDA's commitment to addressing health and nutrition challenges in the country. 

Kumar Chandran, a veteran in nutrition advocacy, takes the helm as the Acting Under Secretary for Food, Nutrition, and Consumer Services. Chandran's experience is vital for propelling the Biden-Harris administration’s nutrition policies. He is joined by Stacy Dean, who continues her role as Deputy Under Secretary for FNCS, bringing her expertise in food and nutrition program transformation. 

Justo Robles returns to USDA as Deputy Chief of Staff in the Office of the Secretary, after his tenure at FEMA. His experience is crucial for building a team that mirrors the nation's diversity and understands the nuances of USDA programs. 

As Chief of Staff to Deputy Secretary Xochitl Torres Small, Russellie Bongolan’s role is pivotal in enhancing USDA's internal operations and program delivery. Her rich experience in both public and private sectors will be instrumental in recruiting the next generation of USDA leaders. 

Finally, Alberto A. Gonzalez, Jr., steps in as Senior Policy Advisor at the Food and Nutrition Service. His background in health and nutrition policy positions him as an effective Chief Policy Advisor, shaping policies that impact millions of Americans. 

These appointments signify a strategic move by the USDA to strengthen its focus on reducing hunger, enhancing nutrition, and ensuring that all Americans have equitable access to essential food and nutrition services.
