Precipitation Options Forecast for Next 2 Weeks

It appears that our stretch of relatively dry weather is coming to an end. The first system moving out of the western United States brought 0.50 to 1.00 inch of moisture to south central and central Nebraska on Wednesday. Lighter amounts were reported east, north, and west of this region. This system is the first of at least three storms that will impact the central U.S. over the next two weeks.

Models are coming into better agreement in regards to a storm system entering the central Plains as early as next Monday afternoon, with snowfall likely across the southeastern two-thirds of the state. The exact storm track remains uncertain, but it does appear snow accumulations of at least several inches will occur somewhere in the state.

After a brief respite from storm number two, a third system is currently forecast by the GFS model to impact the central Plains as early as next Friday, but more likely next weekend. At this time, the models hint at a wide range of precipitation types across the central Plains. However, it does appear that heavy snowfall will fall across the central Rockies with some of it spreading out into the western High Plains. Keep abreast of weather updates since this storm has the potential to bring significant snowfall to parts of the central U.S.

After the passage of next weekend’s projected storm, the GFS model indicates that Arctic air will surge into the region with a reinforcing shot of cold coming the first full weekend of December. The GFS gets very aggressive with the second surge of Arctic air and hints at the possibility that a low-pressure system will slide down the lee of the Rocky Mountains from Montana to Texas. This would develop upslope flow along the lee of the Rockies and would mirror the track that brought heavy snowfall to the area just prior to Halloween. If this does develop, it would be the fourth storm in two weeks.
