Seed Speaks Season Seven Tackles the Future of Plant Breeding

Change is inevitable in our world. Think about it: Just about 40 years ago, technology like the Internet was completely new — you couldn’t find it in every household. Today, 5.07 billion people around the world use the internet — that’s 63.5 per cent of the world’s total population.

It was inevitable that technology, change and innovation would eventually touch the realm of agriculture as well. Plant breeding, in particular, has experienced tremendous change since the introduction of the first commercialized GMOs in the 1990s. Since then, plant breeding innovations and technology have boomed. There’s technology like genomics and phenotyping, predictive artificial intelligences, gene editing and so much more.

On season seven of Seed Speaks, our hosts will be bringing experts across the realm of plant breeding to help us understand the evolution the seed industry has undergone since the days of Gregor Mendel. Though a lot has changed over the past 200 years since Mendel walked the Earth, the goal remains the same: constant innovation to feed the planet and growing population.
