SDSU Extension will host a soil health workshop in Fort Pierre Jan. 21, 2016. This is the second in a series of three soil health workshops to be held across South Dakota this winter.
The workshop will be held at The Casey Tibbs Rodeo Center and run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (CST).
The speaker line-up includes soil health specialists from NRCS, SDSU Extension and private industry including: Jay Fuhrer, NRCS from Bismarck, N.D. Pulling from his experience, Fuhrer's talk will focus on livestock integration, utilizing cover crops to extend grazing and promote soil health and no-till in his presentation.
Lance Gunderson, Ward Labs in Kearney, Neb. Ward Labs is a leader in performing and utilizing the new Haney Soil test in their lab. Gunderson will share some background regarding the test and some of the things he has learned from working with it.
Jeff Zimprich, South Dakota NRCS State Conservationist. Zimprich will offer an overview of the recently completed Cropping Systems Inventory in South Dakota as well as some other soil health highlights.
Dr. Paul Jasa, Extension Research Engineer from the University Nebraska-Lincoln, will present "A Systems Approach to No-Till." Jasa has a lifetime of experience and valuable insight into equipment adaptions that can help no-tillers with some of their challenging equipment issues.
A producer panel will follow Jasa's presentation during which producers will share some of their experiences integrating livestock, cover crops and no-till on their land.
Dwayne Beck, manager of the SDSU Dakota Lakes Research Farm, longtime no-till researcher and advocate, will wrap up the event.
