Comprehensive Support Available for Wildfire-Hit Farmers

The recent Texas wildfires have heavily impacted agricultural operations, prompting the USDA to offer essential disaster assistance to help farmers and livestock producers recover. Available support includes a variety of financial and technical assistance programs.

Key among these is the Livestock Indemnity Program (LIP), which compensates producers for livestock losses that exceed normal mortality due to adverse weather events like wildfires.

Producers are advised to keep accurate records and notify the USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) by March 2, 2026, for the 2025 calendar year losses.

The Emergency Assistance for Livestock, Honeybees, and Farm-Raised Fish Program (ELAP) also provides crucial support, covering losses related to feed and grazing that are not typically insured. Notices of loss and applications for payment must be submitted by the same deadline.

For those with damaged orchards or nurseries, the Tree Assistance Program (TAP) provides cost-sharing opportunities to replant or rehabilitate eligible trees, bushes, and vines. Applications must be filed within 90 days of the disaster event.

Eddie Trevino, Deputy State Executive Director for FSA in Texas, underscores the value of prompt action. “Our staff is ready to help producers with applications and guide them through the recovery process as soon as they report their losses,” he confirms.

FSA offers emergency farm loans for producers in designated disaster areas to help recover from production and physical losses. These loans can aid in purchasing necessary supplies and refinancing debts.

Producers are also reminded to manage risks effectively by reporting crop damages to their insurance agents within the required timeframes to fulfill federal crop insurance protocols.

USDA's comprehensive approach provides Texas farmers with the necessary tools and resources to recover from wildfire damages and prepare for future agricultural challenges.
