Syngenta Encourages Illinois Growers To Plan For Diversity In 2016 Hybrid Selections

  • Weather in 2015 again proved that Mother Nature remains unpredictable
  • Golden Harvest® Corn offers a broad range of hybrids to maximize performance regardless of conditions

Conditions like the ones Illinois growers experienced in 2015 are exactly why local Syngenta agronomists are encouraging diversification in corn hybrid selections for 2016. With both extended wet and dry spells hitting the state from planting through harvest, it was those growers who planted a range of corn hybrids who maximized their results.

Choosing the right hybrid mix can improve overall performance despite unpredictable weather patterns. Syngenta offers a broad portfolio of Golden Harvest® Corn hybrids tailored to different environments, soil types and growing conditions to help growers succeed.

“It all comes down to making sure the hybrids match the needs of your fields. Selecting a range of hybrids that work well in your growing conditions can help avoid unforeseen challenges during the season and ultimately maximize yields at harvest – regardless of what the rest of the season brings,” said Todd Thumma, product development agronomist at Syngenta.

Key hybrids to consider for 2016 include:
  • G10S30-3220 brand: With the Agrisure Viptera® trait, G10S30-3220 brand provides control of key above- ground insects such as corn earworm, cutworm, armyworm and corn borer, and it’s a solid yielder.
  • G12J11-3011A brand: An Agrisure Artesian® hybrid, G12J11-3011A brand maximizes yield when it rains and increases yield when it doesn’t. Grower Jeff Thomas of Edinburg, Illinois, can testify to the hybrid’s performance in the face of challenges, with 2015 yields almost 40 bushels per acre (bu/A) above the county average despite a thorough soaking in June. “It was the best corn on my farm this year – and it was a tough year,” Thomas said.
  • G14R38-3000GT brand: Growers with continuous corn acres will especially benefit from this hybrid, which has proven strong emergence and seedling vigor, as well as solid root and stalk strength. Hybrids with the Agrisure® 3000GT trait stack also provide protection against corn borer and corn rootworm.
“With Golden Harvest Corn, we aim to help growers achieve high yields by placing hybrids matched to their fields,” said Tim O’Brien, Ph.D., Golden Harvest Corn product manager at Syngenta. “By using a unique pool of corn genetics – and adding breakthrough traits and technologies – the diverse Syngenta portfolio of hybrids provides growers options to unleash the potential of each field and finish with strong yields year in and year out.”
