Tours, Networking, Field Crop Workshops Highlight Pinney Purdue Field Day

Field visits, vendor exhibits and presentations by Purdue Extension specialists will highlight the Pinney Purdue Agricultural Center Field Day, Aug. 19.

The center is located at 11402 County Line Road, Wanatah, two miles west of U.S. 421 and one-half mile north of U.S. 30.
 
Participants will have an opportunity to tour the farm and network with other farmers and ag industry managers, as well as learn about the latest field crops issues and trends.
 
Registration and booths open at 7:30 a.m., followed by a presentation from agricultural economist Chris Hurt on "What's the Economic Outlook Looking Like?" at 8:15 a.m. Field tours begin at 9:20 a.m.
 
Topics and presenters include:
 
* “Establishing Strong Corn and Dealing with Flood Issues”: Bob Nielsen, Extension corn specialist and professor of agronomy.
 
* “Managing Soybeans in a Wet Season”: Shaun Casteel, Extension soybean specialist and professor of agronomy.
 
* “Update on Crop Disease and Fungicide Issues”: Kiersten Wise, Extension plant pathologist and associate professor of botany and plant pathology.
 
* “How to Properly Clean Out a Sprayer”: Fred Whitford, Purdue pesticide program coordinator. 
 
* “Drainage Issues and Water Quality”: Jane Frankenberger, Extension water quality specialist and professor of agricultural and biological engineering.
 
A pork chop lunch is provided for those participating in the morning program. 
 
A twilight program is planned on the same day for those unable to attend the morning presentations. Registration begins at 5:30 p.m. and presentations on late-season nitrogen applications, weed control and cleaning out a sprayer start at 6 p.m.
 
Participants needing recertification credits for a private applicator pesticide license can receive credit at either program. Bring the license and $10 to registration.
 
Commercial pesticide applicators can get continuing certification hours and certified crop advisers are eligible for continuing education units.
