USDA Invests in Montana's Agriculture, Boosting Meat Processing and Rural Economies

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has joined forces with agricultural producers in Montana to drive growth and resilience in the state's rural economy. Kathleen Williams, the State Director of USDA Rural Development in Montana, recently announced strategic investments aimed at boosting independent meat and poultry processing capacity, expanding market opportunities for farmers, and supporting a thriving rural workforce.

Through the Meat and Poultry Intermediary Lending Program (MPILP), USDA has allocated a substantial $77 million across 12 states. Notably, Mountain West Economic Development in Kalispell, Montana, secured a significant $15 million award. This funding injection will enable the organization to spearhead the expansion of processing operations in the Flathead Valley, encompassing Flathead, Lake, Lincoln, and Sanders counties.

The MPILP grants serve as a vital financial lifeline for intermediary lenders, empowering them to provide essential funding for the establishment, expansion, and smooth operation of independent meat and poultry processing facilities. In the ongoing fiscal year, USDA has already awarded a total of $186 million to 24 MPILP projects, fostering economic growth across 14 states and Puerto Rico.

The USDA's Meat and Poultry Processing Expansion Program (MPPEP) has channeled $38 million across five states to support independent processors. This program, alongside MPILP, is instrumental in expanding market access, promoting entrepreneurship, and addressing critical supply chain challenges.

Under the leadership of the Administration, USDA Rural Development plays a pivotal role in driving economic opportunities and enhancing the quality of life in rural and Tribal areas. Through a range of financial assistance programs such as loans, loan guarantees, and grants, the agency supports essential infrastructure improvements, business development, housing, community facilities, public safety, healthcare, and high-speed internet access.

These strategic investments by USDA not only strengthen Montana's meat processing industry but also generate employment opportunities, spur economic growth, and foster community resilience. By prioritizing collaboration and sustainable development, this initiative paves the way for a vibrant and prosperous future for Montana's agricultural sector and rural communities.
