Why soil carbon matters?

The Saskatchewan Soil Conservation Association's Soil Conference is underway in Saskatoon.

President Mark Hoimyr says the group's role is to promote the health of the soil and good practices that agriculture can do to do that.

"People now understand that it's a vast ecosystem that if we can manage well can really help us produce some really great food. That's kind of where our group comes in. We're, we're very, very passionate about, about getting this right and making some improvements on the land."

This year's theme for the conference is "Why Soil Carbon Matters?"

Hoimyr says it will cover a lot of ground from soil health, to carbon markets, and measuring and monitoring soil carbon.

"We've got some great speakers when it comes to the carbon markets, that have been talked about so much lately. Some of the things that farmers need to be aware of before we get involved in them and kind of run through of something that's really new to to a lot of producers."

This year's speakers include Joel Williams, Jay Fuhrer, Aldyen Donnelly, Kelly Dobson and Kim Cornish, as well as a producer panel featuring Gary Richards, Stuart Chutter and Michael Ferguson.

Today's event is being held at the Saskatoon Inn and is also being held virtually.
