Winter Sportfishing Season Now Open in Nova Scotia

The winter sportfishing season is now open in Nova Scotia.

“Sportfishing is a great way to get outside during the winter months – on your own, with friends, or as a family,” said Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister Steve Craig. “Whether you’re an experienced angler or looking to try winter sportfishing for the first time, please remember to make safety a top priority.”

There are lakes across the province where people have the opportunity to fish for brook and rainbow trout, white and yellow perch, smallmouth bass and chain pickerel. Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture hatcheries stock many lakes with trout each winter to ensure anglers enjoy a good sportfishing experience.

A general fishing licence, available online, is required for winter sportfishing in fresh water. Licences purchased on or after April 1, 2022, are valid through March 31, 2023.

Some safety tips for winter sportfishing include:

  • monitoring weather conditions
  • dressing in layers
  • checking ice thickness before fishing
  • wearing a flotation device when appropriate (for example, if fishing from a boat); and
  • anglers should also tell someone where they will be fishing and when they plan to be back.
