Video: Sows in heat are stimulated by boar during artificial insemination

Hog farmer Hardy, from the RM of Lorne, submitted this video of a group of sows in the breeding barn. Artificial insemination (AI) is the most common method to help sows achieve a successful and healthy pregnancy. AI protects sows from potential injuries that could occur using the natural method, since boars can be large and aggressive during the process. Allowing boars to have some contact with sows that are coming into heat helps to stimulate female hormones and maximize the chance of a successful pregnancy.
