Video: How Soil Temperature Can Affect Your Corn

Soil temperature can have a major impact on your optimal planting date for corn. The major concern with planting too early comes from the imbibe process, generally the first 36 hours the seed is in the ground. Planting corn in colder temperatures can cause the seed to be hydrated with water that is too cold for the seed to handle, and can cause chilling injury to the corn seed. Pioneer Field Agronomist Tony Zerusen examines studies that look at corn seed imbibition, corn seed injuries that can happen when plated in colder soil temperatures, and recommendations on products to help avoid these types of injuries.
