USDA invests in solar power to lower rural electricity costs

Under the guidance of the Administration, the USDA is set to enhance rural American lives with a substantial clean energy project in Nebraska.

Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack announced that SE Municipal Solar LLC will receive approximately $30 million to develop solar photovoltaic generation facilities, totaling 18.72 megawatts. These facilities are expected to provide enough energy to power more than 1,700 residential homes across various Nebraska communities.

This initiative is funded through the Inflation Reduction Act and is a pivotal part of the Powering Affordable Clean Energy (PACE) program. It represents a historic move akin to the Rural Electrification Act of 1936, aimed at revitalizing rural electrification and economic growth.

The project will span several locations including Alliance, Gering, Sidney, and Imperial, with a focus on not only enhancing energy access but also on stimulating local economies through new job opportunities and workforce training programs. This effort is a testament to the USDA's commitment to fostering sustainable growth and resilience in rural areas.

Additionally, the project aligns with the Justice40 Initiative, ensuring that a significant portion of federal clean energy benefits reaches underserved communities.

By integrating clean energy solutions with economic and workforce development, the USDA is setting a precedent for comprehensive rural support in the modern era.
