In March 2020, producers from Argentina held a four-day demonstration to express displeasure with the government’s decision to increase soybean export taxes by 3 percent. This increase brought the tax to 33 percent.
The government also raised export levies on beef from 7 percent to 9 percent, and on corn and wheat from 7 percent to 12 percent.
The government’s reasoning for the increases was to generate revenue to help the national economy. The country’s debt reached US$103 billion that month.
