Enhanced support for fruit and vegetable producers

Recently Agriculture Department announced a significant funding initiative, disbursing $82.3 million to bolster the specialty crop industry in the United States. This funding will enhance the market presence and research capabilities for producers of fruits, vegetables, and tree nuts.

The allocation includes $73 million from the Specialty Crop Block Grant Program and $9.4 million through the Specialty Crop Multi-State Program, targeting over 520 projects. These projects encompass a wide range of activities, from innovative marketing campaigns to research on crop diseases and cover crops.

Arkansas Department of Agriculture Secretary Wes Ward emphasized the impact of this funding - “This funding will enable our growers to innovate, reach new markets, and continue producing the high-quality crops that define our state.”

This strategic investment comes as specialty crop producers urge for more support in the upcoming farm bill. The proposed increase in funding for the Specialty Crop Block Grant Program to $100 million annually highlights a growing recognition of the sector's importance for agricultural competitiveness and sustainability.

This initiative underscores the USDA's commitment to supporting specialty crops, crucial for ensuring a diverse and stable food supply and enhancing agricultural sustainability in America.
