With the help of the provincial government’s Jobs and Prosperity Fund, Conestoga Meat Packers in Breslau, Ont. will increase its pork processing capacity by 86 per cent, according to a Friday government release.

Conestoga Meat Packers will receive up to $5.3 million in funding, which will allow the company to install top-of-the-line equipment. These upgrades will nearly double the current production capacity.

This improvement will also create approximately 170 new jobs, according to the release.

“The changes to our facility will not only allow us to process more hogs but everything about this process will be better,” Arnold Drung, president of Conestoga Meat Packers, said in an interview with Farms.com.

“We already produce an excellent product and this (investment) will allow us to do so more efficiently and in a better environment for our team members.”

This initiative will create support roles and jobs on the production line, said Drung.

Jeff Leal, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs touched on the importance of this investment for the province.

“Our government is proud to support the continued growth of Ontario’s food processing sector, an important driver of our economy,” said in the release. “This support will help Conestoga Meat Packers increase its productivity, enhance competitiveness and create good jobs in Waterloo Region.”
