Ag Ministers Discuss Changes To AgriStability

The country's agriculture ministers met Tuesday in Ottawa.

One of the items discussed was how to improve Business Risk Management (BRM) programs.

"Ministers have asked officials to change the treatment of private insurance under AgriStability programs, so that insurance payments wouldn't take away from support provided under AgriStability," explained Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food. "This would encourage producers to apply to AgriStability to protect themselves from major losses and, if they wish, access complimentary insurance which would not interfere with the federal/provincial program. Such a combination of BRM tools would provide greater protection and relief to producers in time of great uncertainty."
