Cargill Plant Under Careful Observation by AHS

Alberta's health department is keeping a close eye on the situation at the Cargill beef plant in High River, after a spike last week in the number of COVID 19 cases there.

Dr. Deena Hinshaw reported Friday afternoon, an 842 percent increase in cases associated with the plant south of Calgary.  On Thursday, plant officials closed the slaughter section of the facility and planned to re-open it Monday.  The facility had been reduced to only one shift a day.  Previously, there had only been 38 known cases associated with the plant.  But during Friday's daily update, Hinshaw said there were now more than 350 cases identified in households with people who work at the plant.

In a townhall conference on the weekend, Alberta ag minister Devin Dreeshen told reporters he was confident conditions at the plant were safe and workers could return this week.  Some workers have complained to media outlets, employees at the plant must stand close together, making social distancing an issue.  The plant accounts for about a third of all beef processed in Canada.
