Live Pigs to Highlight Open Farm Day ar FFDC

By Bruce Cochrane

Members of the public will have the opportunity learn about Manitoba's hog industry and how food gets from the farm to their plates as the Bruce D. Campbell Farm and Food Discovery Centre observes Open Farm Day in Manitoba.

The University of Manitoba's Bruce D. Campbell Farm and Food Discovery Centre will kick off Farm and Food Awareness Week, which runs from September 21 to 26 by observing Open Farm Day Sunday September 20 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Visitors to the centre will be treated to complimentary admission and a free pork-on-a-bun BBQ lunch compliments of Manitoba Pork from 11am to 1pm.

Bruce D. Campbell Farm and Food Discovery Centre Manager Myrna Grahn says one of the facility's highlights is the opportunity to see directly into the University's swine research barn.

Myrna Grahn-University of Manitoba:
Manitoba Pork has been a contributor and involved from the beginning of the Bruce D. Campbell Farm and Food Discovery Centre.

What's unique about our centre is that you can view the various parts of an operating hog barn, which the majority of people would never get an opportunity to see because of biosecurity and having to shower in and shower out of our of our hog barns across the province.

So, here at the centre, we are able to let people see the piglets being born, see the sows, see the pigs after they've been weaned from their mothers and it's just a great opportunity.

When there's baby piglets being born, we promote that.
Every three months, three weeks, three days there are baby pigs.
You can every month see baby pigs being born, we feature those on our web site.

When our visitors walk past that window, you can hear from my office the oos and the aws when they see those baby pigs so it is quite a highlight when we have guests come out.
