Maine Hay Prices Stay Stable

Timothy-hay prices have remained steady over the past year for Robert Guptill of Cedar Valley Farms in Patten, ME.

Good-quality small squares of timothy recently sold for $3/bale directly out of the field and for $3.50/bale from the barn. Those are the prices that Guptill and other growers in his area have charged horse owners and dairy producers the past couple of years.

His 4 x 4’ round bales, marketed to dairy and beef operations, sell for $35/bale. That price hasn’t changed since last year, either, says Guptill, who produced 500 small square bales and about 750 round bales from 250 acres this year.
