The Iowa Farmers Union (IFU) was pleased to host Iowa U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley during a virtual town hall earlier today. The Senator addressed nearly 180 IFU members and rural residents on topics related to the impacts of tariff battles and federal funding and staff cuts at the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).
“Thank you to Senator Grassley for joining the members of the Iowa Farmers Union in a conversation about the damage being done to family farms and our rural communities,” said Iowa Farmers Union President Aaron Lehman.
“Farmer voices need to be elevated now more than ever as the Trump administration breaks their commitment to farmers implementing conservation measures on their farms and building their farms capacity. In addition, damaged trade partnerships cause hurt to the farmers’ bottom line in both the short-term and long-term.”
Iowa Farmers Union stands ready to work with Senator Grassley on the following important actions on behalf of Iowa farmers, ranchers, and rural communities:
- Farmers can’t wait 90 days for the President’s team to make a decision on following through with already obligated funding. We stand ready to help the Iowa Congressional delegation move this process along and DEFEND these important investments in conservation, soil health, new markets, clean energy, and environmental services.
- We understand that President Trump is not listening to our senior senator right now. We are ready to help Senator Grassley be heard. Iowa farmers need to be heard now.
- We appreciate that Senator Grassley is committed to holding the Trump administration to the rule of law. We stand ready to support Senator Grassley when he demands President Trump follow the court orders to follow through on contracts and commitments to farmers. We’re disappointed that the President is appealing so many court orders and instead is offering novel interpretations of federal law and the Constitution.
