Bill C-280, the Financial Protection for Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Farmers Act, is currently under consideration in the Canadian Senate. The Bill has now been referred for consideration at the Senate Banking Committee, with Committee meetings to follow in the coming weeks.
If passed, Bill C-280 would establish a deemed trust mechanism for fresh produce growers and sellers in Canada, ensuring payment in the case of buyer bankruptcy.
Last week, CPMA sent a joint association letter to all Senators. The OPMA is one of the 35 national and regional associations that signed their name to the letter.
Along with the letter, a new "Q & A" infographic was sent to provide further information on how the deemed trust would work in Canada and why it's so critical to the fresh produce sector.
