Vietnam Successfully Produces Vaccine Against African Swine Fever

This information was said by Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) Phung Duc Tien at a press conference on information and results of research and production of cholera vaccines. heo Africa takes place on the morning of June 1.

The vaccine has the trade name NAVET-ASFVAC of Navetco Central Veterinary Medicine Joint Stock Company. Expected selling price is 34,000 – 36,000 VND/dose.

Mr. Nguyen Van Long, acting director of the Department of Animal Health (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), said that African swine fever is a dangerous infectious disease caused by a virus in pigs, first appearing in Africa in 1921. has the characteristics of spreading quickly, causing disease in all ages and all types of pigs (including domestic pigs of all kinds and wild boar). The disease has a high mortality rate of up to 100%.

It has been more than 100 years since ASF was discovered, although more than 4,000 studies related to ASF virus and vaccine development by scientists have been published, There is no commercial vaccine against African swine fever in the world.

However, after a long time of focusing on research, in early November 2019, US scientists announced the successful study of a attenuated ASF-G gene that had been removed from the ASF-G gene. – Delta I177L. This is a very important premise for the research and production of vaccines against African swine fever.

Right in November 2019, leaders of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development sent leaders of the Department of Animal Health to the US to attend a meeting, to meet directly with American experts to discuss coordination in research and production of African swine fever vaccines.

Immediately after receiving the ASFV-G-?I177L seed strain from the US Department of Agriculture in September 2020, Navetco Company urgently implemented research. After 5 trials, 100% of vaccinated pigs were protected against African swine fever virus in the laboratory. and 80% protected under manufacturing conditions, the duration of immunity of the vaccine lasts 6 months after vaccination.

“Thus, Vietnam has officially produced a commercial vaccine against African swine fever, meeting the technical and professional requirements, ensuring sterility, safety and efficacy, and prolonging immunity. 6 months long, contributing to the safety of livestock and pork production” – Mr. Long affirmed.
