Winter Production Meetings Offer Credits For Crop Consultants

  • Winter production meetings offer continuing credits for crop consultants
  • Meetings resume Jan. 4 in Lonoke
  • Meetings offer growers the chance to learn about new research, techniques

Crop consultants can earn continuing education credits at the annual winter production meetings held by the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture’s Cooperative Extension Service.

The type and number of available credits varies by meeting and crop consultants should contact the county extension office hosting the meeting to confirm hours and types.

The meetings are an opportunity for growers to learn about current research in commodity crops and other aspects of production being performed by University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture agronomists and other experts. The meetings typically include reviews of the performance of verification plots across the state, and an assessment of recommendations provided by Division of Agriculture experts throughout the previous year.

“What we’re doing is sharing the latest research information and providing producers with production practices they can implement that hopefully will save them money,” said Hank Chaney, extension area agriculture and natural resources specialist for the Division of Agriculture.

“Our recommendations are non-biased,” he said. “If we talk about particular products, we’re not promoting anything for any other reason than that’s what we’ve found to work best.”

The series of meetings will continue though March 2016.

Ancient Cereal Crop Making a Return to Ontario Farm Fields

Video: Ancient Cereal Crop Making a Return to Ontario Farm Fields

There’s a new version of an ancient grain that is making a return to Ontario farm fields. Developed by German company KWS Seeds, hybrid rye boasts an impressive yield growth.
It’s the highest yielding cereal crop for grain said Livestock Feed Consultant Laura Eastwood. She says Hybrid Rye has a great amino acid profile, and it’s packed with high quality soluble fiber which are the good fiber for intestinal health benefits and satiety for pigs.
