Video: Rootless Corn Syndrome: Causes of Floppy Corn


When corn is planted in heavier soils, where compaction becomes a concern, rootless corn syndrome can rear its ugly head. In this video, Pioneer Field Agronomist Paul Yoder discusses the causes, symptoms and management of rootless corn syndrome or floppy corn. Rootless corn generally occurs in high compaction areas, causing the nodal roots to be underdeveloped and most likely dead. While some farmers try to cultivate the corn to put more dirt to surviving plants, but Paul says really the only good solution is rainfall and moisture. Loosening up the soil can help the nodal root system grow through the compaction and bounce back.
