Beekeepers Prepping For Winter

Beekeepers in the province are wrapping up for the season, putting bees away for the winter.

Morden-area beekeeper Mark Friesen says he is currently doing health assessments.

He notes there were some unwanted pests this year.

"Diseases are changing all the time. You have to worry about resistance that pests have against treatments. It's the same in all agriculture, but with our particular methods that we're using right now to try to deal with the mite loads, it's becoming like we have less tools in the toolbox. We're right now looking at multiple methods of treatments to try and deal with our mite loads."

Friesen says the late season rains were crucial.

"That made a big difference. If those rains hadn't come, that would have seriously impacted everything. It's the same for all of agriculture. We could sure use another two weeks of rain still."

He says honey yields across the province were average to below average due to the dry weather.

Friesen notes one positive is the high honey prices that we're seeing at the moment.
