The December 1, 2021 Oklahoma hog and pig inventory, at 2.09 million head, was slightly higher than December 2020. The number of breeding hogs totaled 460 thousand head, unchanged from last year. The December 1 market hog inventory was up 1 percent from a year ago at 1.63 million head, 78 percent of the total hog and pig inventory.
The September 2021-November 2021 Oklahoma pig crop totaled 1.97 million head, 13 percent below last year. Pigs per litter averaged 10.7, down 1 percent from the previous year. Sows farrowed during September 2021 through November 2021 totaled 185 thousand head, down 12 percent from last year.
With 460,000 sows, the Oklahoma sow herd population is the fifth largest in the US based on the December first numbers. Iowa, North Carolina, Illinois, Minnesota and Oklahoma are the top five sow herd population states. The 2.09 million head total hog and pig count makes Oklahoma the ninth largest hog state, based on total hog and pig numbers.
Nationally, the U.S. inventory of all hogs and pigs on December 1, 2021, is estimated at 74.2 million head, down 4 percent from a year ago and down 1 percent from September 1, 2021. The breeding hog inventory, at 6.18 million head, was up slightly from last year but down slightly from the previous quarter. Market hog inventory, at 68.0 million head, was down 4 percent from last year and down 1 percent from last quarter.
