Recent announcements target labour recruitment and training

Recent announcements from the Manitoba government are designed to support jobs in rural communities and the ag industry.

Both came on Nov. 15 from different ministers.

Jamie Moses, the minister of job creation, and Mike Moroz, the minister of innovation and new technology, jointly announced more than $846,000 through the Sector Council Program to provide training in multiple areas – one being agri-foods.

Part of the funding will be used to support Creative Manitoba and Food and Beverage Manitoba.

The Northern Arts and Food Project will create and sustain partnerships in the creative arts and agri-food sectors.

“This project will build capacity for pilot projects within and between the creative arts and agri-food sectors, in partnership with organizations such as University College of the North and ImagiNorthern,” a government release says.

The other announcement came from Malaya Marcelino, Manitoba’s minister of labour and immigration.

The government is launching a three-year West-Central Immigration Initiative pilot with even rural municipalities and Gambler First Nation to help employers address labour and succession challenges.

The government surveyed 85 employers, who estimated the region needs up to 300 people to meet labour needs within three years.

“By working together, we’re responding to the local needs for skilled workers in rural Manitoba and ensuring Manitoba continues to be a welcoming province,” Minister Marcelino said in a statement.

The West-Central Immigration Initiative partners are:

  • Municipality of Russell-Binscarth;
  • Rural Municipality of Yellowhead;
  • Municipality of Roblin;
  • Rural Municipality of Ellice-Archie;
  • Rural Municipality of Riding Mountain West;
  • Rossburn Municipality;
  • Prairie View Municipality; and
  • Gambler First Nation.
